History

Origin and Ancestry

The rulers of Ajairajpura belong to the esteemed Nathawat clan, a premier sub-clan of the Kachwaha dynasty of Amber and Jaipur. The Nathawats trace their lineage back to Rao Jiwan Singhji (Natha Ji), the son of Gopalji, who was himself the son of Raja Prithviraj Singhji I of Amber (who ruled from 1503 to 1527). The family line of Ajairajpura branched off from the house of Chomu, one of the most influential and wealthy nobles of the erstwhile Jaipur State.

During the turbulent times of the 18th century, characterized by the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of Maratha influence in Rajputana, the Nathawat nobles played crucial roles as military commanders and advisors to the Maharajas of Jaipur. Thakur Bhopal Singhji carved out Ajairajpura as a distinct seat of local governance, strengthening the administrative frontiers of the Jaipur state.

Socio-Religious Reforms and Cultural Legacy

Unlike many contemporary feudal estates that focused purely on military expansion, the house of Ajairajpura was distinguished by its progressive and spiritual outlook. The rulers and the family members actively patronized the Bhakti movement, which was sweeping through northern India.

They became staunch supporters of the Dadu Panth, a reformist, non-sectarian tradition founded by the saint Dadu Dayal. This association helped foster a culture of egalitarianism, humanitarianism, and religious tolerance within the Thikana. The integration of Dadu Panthi philosophy into the court culture of Ajairajpura influenced their governance style, making them highly receptive to social welfare and ethical administration.

The Modern Era and Contribution to Jaipur State

In the 20th century, the Thikana continued to produce visionary administrators. The most prominent modern figure from this house was Major General Rawal Amar Singhji of Ajairajpura. Serving during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, he was a highly decorated military officer who initially served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Jaipur State Forces.

Recognized for his astute administrative capabilities, Major General Rawal Amar Singhji was later appointed as the Home Minister of Jaipur State in the 1940s. He played an instrumental role in maintaining law and order, managing the state’s internal security during the crucial transition period leading up to India's independence, and overseeing the integration of the state forces into the Indian Union.

Post-Independence and Contemporary Era

Following the integration of Rajputana into the United State of Greater Rajasthan in 1949 and the subsequent abolition of the Zamindari and Jagirdari systems, the family of Ajairajpura successfully transitioned from feudal lords to active participants in democratic India. Embracing a modern humanist ideology, the descendants of the Thikana have contributed to various fields, including corporate business, public service, and heritage preservation, while maintaining their ancestral ties to the region's rich cultural history.
