History
History of Wadagam State
Wadagam was a 5th Class State during the British Raj, located in the Mahi Kantha Agency of the Bombay Presidency. It was founded by Kumar Shri Keshavdasji Rajsinhji of Ranasan, a scion of the family of Ranasan and the former Raos of Chandrawati. The rulers of Wadagam belonged to the Rehwar clan of the Parmar Rajputs, tracing their lineage back to the celebrated Parmar rulers of Malwa and the ancient capital of Chandravati near Mount Abu.
Origins and Foundation
The history of Wadagam is intricately linked with the ancient Parmar dynasty of Chandravati. Following the decline of Chandravati under successive Islamic invasions, the ruling family migrated to various regions of modern-day Gujarat and Rajasthan. A branch of this family established the state of Ranasan. In the 18th century, Kumar Shri Keshavdasji Rajsinhji, the younger son of the Thakore of Ranasan, Rajsinhji, moved out of the parent state to establish an independent principality. This new seat of power came to be known as Wadagam.
The British Era and Political Classification
Under the British East India Company and the subsequent British Raj, Wadagam was classified as a non-salute 5th Class state within the Mahi Kantha Agency. This classification meant that the Thakore Saheb of Wadagam exercised limited civil and criminal jurisdiction within his territory, with more serious judicial cases being referred to the British Political Agent stationed at Sadra.
The state covered an area of approximately 28 square miles and comprised several villages. The rulers paid a yearly tribute (ghasdana) to the Gaekwad of Baroda through the British authorities, a common fiscal arrangement among the Mahi Kantha states. Despite its modest size and revenue, the ruling house maintained its distinct identity and internal autonomy, upholding the martial traditions of the Parmar Rajputs.
Administration and Key Reforms
The administration of Wadagam, though traditional, saw gradual modernization during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Thakores focused on agricultural development, which was the primary source of revenue for the state. Efforts were made to improve irrigation and provide judicial relief to the agrarian population. Due to its proximity to larger states like Idar State, Wadagam frequently engaged in diplomatic interactions to safeguard its territorial integrity and local rights.
Accession and Post-Independence Era
Following India's independence in August 1947, the last ruler of Wadagam signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the state into the Indian Union. On 10th June 1948, Wadagam was formally integrated into the Bombay State under the integration scheme of smaller states initiated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Later, during the linguistic reorganization of states in 1960, the territory became part of the newly formed state of Gujarat. Today, the former territories of Wadagam are situated within the Sabarkantha district of Gujarat, where the heritage of its founding Parmar rulers is still remembered by the local population.
