History

Origin and Foundation

The house of Naila traces its ancestry to the illustrious Champawat clan of the Rathore dynasty, which originated from the Marwar (Jodhpur) region. The Champawats are direct descendants of Rao Champa, one of the heroic brothers of Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur). The family branch at Naila emerged from the noble house of Peelwa.

In the late 19th century, three prominent brothers from the Peelwa family—Thakur Fateh Singh, Thakur Shambhu Singh, and Thakur Devi Singh—migrated to the Kingdom of Jaipur. Their exceptional military prowess and administrative skills quickly earned them the trust of the Jaipur royal court. While Thakur Fateh Singh founded the estate of Naila, his brothers went on to establish the prominent neighboring thikanas of Kanota and Gondi.

The Golden Era and Administrative Prominence

Thakur Fateh Singh was a visionary administrator and one of the most influential nobles of his era in Rajasthan. He served as the Musahib Ala (Prime Minister/Chief Minister) of Jaipur State under the reformist ruler Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II. During his tenure, Thakur Fateh Singh played a pivotal role in the modernization of Jaipur, supervising key public works, educational reforms, and judicial restructuring.

His unwavering loyalty and administrative excellence continued into the reign of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II, who formally granted him the jagir of Naila in 1880. Under Thakur Fateh Singh's governance, Naila was developed as a model estate, complete with organized revenue systems, local welfare initiatives, and robust security.

Architectural Heritage: The Naila Fort

To establish his seat of power, Thakur Fateh Singh commissioned the construction of the magnificent Naila Fort (Naila Garh). Perched strategically on a rugged hill overlooking the surrounding plains, the fort is an architectural marvel of the late 19th century. It combines Rajput military defenses with the elegant, symmetric architectural style characteristic of Jaipur. The fort features imposing ramparts, intricate arched gateways, delicate jharokhas (balconies), and beautiful stepwells (baoris) that ensured a reliable water supply for the estate.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the independence of India in 1947 and the integration of princely states, the jagirdari system was abolished. However, the descendants of the Naila family have successfully transitioned into the modern era while preserving their ancestral heritage.

Naila gained significant international attention in March 2000, when the President of the United States, Bill Clinton, visited the village and the historic fort during his official state visit to India. The visit highlighted the success of local women's dairy cooperatives and grassroots governance (Panchayati Raj) in the area, placing Naila on the global map. Today, Naila Fort stands as a prominent symbol of Rathore heritage and remains a key landmark of Jaipur's historical landscape.
