Origin and Foundation of Loonda Thikana

The historical estate of Loonda (also referred to as Lunda) holds a distinguished position within the feudal hierarchy of the erstwhile Mewar State. Belonging to the illustrious Chundawat clan of the Sisodia dynasty, the Thikana of Loonda was granted to Rawat Ranchor Das (Ranchhod Das), the great-grandson of Rawat Kishan Das of Salumber. Rawat Kishan Das was a legendary figure in Mewar history who commanded the Chundawat forces under Maharana Pratap during the historic Battle of Haldighati in 1576. As the Chundawats of Salumber held the hereditary position of premier nobles of Mewar, the offshoot estate of Loonda inherited a legacy of immense military responsibility and political influence.

Feudal Relations and Historical Epochs

During the Mughal and Maratha periods, the Rawats of Loonda served as crucial military commanders for the Maharanas of Udaipur. The strategic location of Loonda required its rulers to maintain a standing garrison to safeguard the borders of the central Mewar plains. Like many other Chundawat estates, Loonda contributed significantly to the defense campaigns against Maratha incursions during the late 18^th century, a period marked by heavy financial exactions and instability across Rajasthan. British Era and Administrative Transition

With the signing of the treaty of 1818 between the East India Company and Maharana Bhim Singh of Udaipur, the region transitioned into a period of relative peace. The Rawats of Loonda adapted from military chieftains to administrative landlords, focusing on agrarian management, local dispute resolution, and socio-economic welfare. Under British suzerainty, the Thikana maintained its traditional autonomy while coordinating with the British political agents stationed at the Mewar Residency. Historical records from the Imperial Gazetteer of India document the administrative structure and revenue settlements of these second-class jagirs under the Udaipur State.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India’s independence in 1947, the accession of the Udaipur State to the Indian Union marked the end of the traditional feudal order. With the enactment of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952, the administrative and revenue-collecting powers of the Loonda Thikana were officially dissolved. Despite the loss of formal privileges, the descendants of the Rawats of Loonda have successfully transitioned into modern professions, politics, and business, while continuing to preserve their ancestral fort, temples, and rich cultural heritage in the contemporary Udaipur district.
