History
Origin and Foundation of Kurki Thikana
The historical estate of Kurki (historically also spelled as Kudki), located in the Jaitaran region of the erstwhile Marwar (Jodhpur) State, holds a distinguished position in the annals of the Rathore dynasty. Kurki was established as a prominent Thikana (fiefdom) of the Mertia Rathore clan, a major sub-branch of the Rathores of Marwar descended from Rao Duda, the ruler of Merta.
During the late 15th century, the estate of Kurki was granted by Rao Viramdeo, the ruler of Merta, to his younger brother, Thakur Ratan Singh Ji. This strategic grant strengthened the frontiers of the Merta principality and established Kurki as a primary seat of the Mertia Rathores. The rulers of Kurki maintained a fierce tradition of chivalry, patronizing arts, and defending their territories against external aggressions.
The Legacy of Saint Meera Bai
The most illustrious chapter in the history of Kurki is its association with the celebrated Vaishnava poet-saint, Meera Bai (c. 1498–1547). She was the daughter of Thakur Ratan Singh Ji of Kurki. Born in the fortress of Kurki, Meera Bai spent her early childhood here before moving to Merta under the care of her grandfather, Rao Duda. Today, Kurki is revered globally by historians, devotees, and tourists as the birthplace of this legendary saint, whose spiritual compositions continue to influence Indian culture and literature.
The Maratha Wars and the Gallantry of Thakur Bahadur Singh
Over the centuries, Kurki shifted between various administrative controls due to the turbulent geopolitical landscape of Rajputana. In the mid-18th century, the Maratha Confederacy, led by powerful generals like Jayappa Scindia (Jai Apa), launched aggressive military campaigns into the Marwar region. This period witnessed intense clashes between the Rathore forces and the invading Marathas.
During these campaigns, Thakur Sahib Bahadur Singh Ji of Kurki displayed exceptional military prowess and gallantry. Recognizing his invaluable service and bravery in resisting the Maratha forces under Scindia, Maharaja Bakhat Singh of Marwar officially restored and granted the Kurki Thikana to Thakur Bahadur Singh Ji. This act consolidated the Mertia Rathore lineage’s hold over Kurki, ensuring its stability during a period of widespread political transition.
British Era and Administrative Stability
With the signing of the treaty of alliance between the East India Company and Maharaja Man Singh of Jodhpur in 1818, Jodhpur State entered a period of relative peace and administrative reform under British suzerainty. Kurki, as an important noble fief of Marwar, benefited from this stabilization. The Thakur Sahibs of Kurki focused on local governance, agricultural development, and maintaining judicial order within their estate, acting as reliable feudatories to the Jodhpur Durbar.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Jodhpur merged into the United State of Rajasthan. Consequently, the feudal system and the privy purses of the Thikanas were abolished under the land reform acts of the 1950s.
In the modern era, Kudki has transitioned into a culturally significant village under the Pali district administration of Rajasthan. The ruins of the historic Kurki fort and the temple dedicated to Meera Bai remain major historical landmarks, drawing researchers and devotees who wish to explore the roots of Rajasthan's rich medieval heritage.
