History
Origin and Foundation of Kunihar Province
The princely state of Kunihar (also historically known as Hat Kot) was founded in 1154 AD by Abhoj Dev, a Raghubansi (Raghuvanshi) Rajput who migrated from Akhnoor in Jammu. Seeking to establish an independent principality, Abhoj Dev settled in the fertile, bowl-shaped Kunihar valley, which is situated in the present-day Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. The name 'Kunihar' is traditionally believed to be derived from 'Kuni', meaning a garland, owing to the garland-like shape of the valley surrounding the central settlement.
The Gurkha Invasion and British Alliance
Like many other Shimla Hill States, Kunihar faced severe political instability during the early 19th century due to the aggressive expansion of the Gurkhas of Nepal. Between 1803 and 1815, the state was occupied by the Gurkha forces under the command of General Amar Singh Thapa. During this period of exile, the ruling family sought refuge in neighboring territories.
The liberation of Kunihar came with the outbreak of the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816). Following the defeat of the Gurkha forces by the British East India Company under General David Ochterlony, the British restored the native rulers of the hill states. Under a Sanad (charter) dated 4th September 1815, Thakur Magan Dev was officially reinstated as the ruler of Kunihar. In exchange for British protection, the state agreed to pay an annual tribute (tribute/nazrana) and allow free passage to British troops through its territory.
Key Rulers and Administrative Reforms
Throughout its history, Kunihar was ruled by a succession of Thakurs who maintained a peaceful and loyal administration under the British Raj:
- Thakur Kishen Singh (1816–1866): Succeeded to the gaddi (throne) as a minor. His long reign was marked by stable agricultural development and close cooperation with the British administration in Simla.
- Thakur Tegh Singh (1866–1905): Under his rule, Kunihar modernized its revenue assessment. In 1892, the state maintained a modest military and police presence consisting of 20 infantrymen, primarily tasked with ceremonial duties and internal security.
- Thakur Kahl Chand (1905–1916): He continued the administrative reforms and focused on local infrastructure and judiciary.
- Thakur Vijay Singh (1916–1948): The last ruling chief of Kunihar. He was highly educated and oversaw the transition of the state into the modern era, establishing the first public schools and dispensaries in the valley.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in August 1947, Thakur Vijay Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the princely state into the Union of India. On 15th April 1948, Kunihar officially integrated into the newly formed province of Himachal Pradesh.
Today, the historical capital, Kunihar, has transformed into a bustling educational, commercial, and agricultural hub within the Arki subdivision of the Solan district. The historical palace (Kunihar Castle), though partially in ruins, stands as a testament to the region's rich architectural heritage and royal past, attracting tourists and historians alike.
