Chandrapur & Padampur

The Chandrapur and Padampur Zamindari, belonging to a branch of the Chauhan Rajput dynasty of Sambalpur, was formally recognized in 1862 when the British administration granted the estate to Thakur Rup Singh along with the hereditary title of Rai Bahadur in recognition of his loyalty during the regional disturbances of the 1857 Uprising. Straddling the borderlands of present-day Chhattisgarh and Odisha along the Mahanadi River basin, this extensive estate comprised 178 villages and served as a crucial socio-political and economic bridge between the Central Provinces and the eastern states. Over the decades, the Chauhan rulers of Padampur-Chandrapur maintained significant agrarian and administrative influence over this linguistically diverse tract, navigating various administrative reorganizations under the British Raj until the estate was finally integrated into the Indian Union following the post-Independence land reforms and the abolition of the proprietary gontiahi and zamindari systems in 1951.
