History

Origin and Foundation of Varsoda

The historical state of Varsoda (also transliterated as Varshoda) was a princely state located in the Mahi Kantha region of Gujarat. The rulers of Varsoda belonged to the illustrious Chavda (Chapa) clan of Rajputs, claiming direct patrilineal descent from the historic rulers of Anhilwad Patan (746–942 CE), founded by the legendary emperor Vanraj Chavda. Following the decline of the Chavda kingdom in Patan and the rise of the Solankis, branches of the royal family migrated eastward, establishing smaller sovereign estates in the fertile plains along the Sabarmati River, including Mansa and Varsoda.

Medieval Era, Mughal, and Maratha Influence

During the medieval era, Varsoda survived as a semi-independent estate, navigating the turbulent political landscapes dominated by the Gujarat Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire. The Chavda chieftains maintained their autonomy by paying occasional tributes to the imperial authorities in Ahmedabad. With the decline of Mughal authority in the 18th century, the Maratha Empire, specifically the Gaekwads of Baroda, extended their hegemony over the Mahi Kantha region. Varsoda was subjected to the Maratha levying of Ghasdana (tribute), which was collected annually through armed expeditions before the British intervened to stabilize the collections.

British Raj Period

Under the British Raj, Varsoda was classified as a non-salute state of the Sixth Class within the Mahi Kantha Agency. In 1812, the British East India Company mediated settlements between the Gaekwad of Baroda and the local Mahi Kantha chiefs, securing stability and recognizing the hereditary rights of the Thakors of Varsoda. The state had an area of approximately 11 square miles, comprising six villages, with its capital at Varsoda town situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River.

The state was managed progressively during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Notable rulers of this period include:

  • Thakur Kishorsinhji Motisinhji: He ascended the gadi (throne) in 1858 and worked toward streamlining land revenue and administrative reforms.
  • Thakur Joravarsinhji Surajmalji: Succeeded to the throne in 1919. Under his reign, efforts were made to improve primary education and healthcare in the state's jurisdiction.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Upon the termination of British suzerainty on August 15, 1947, the last ruler of Varsoda signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the state into the Dominion of India. On June 10, 1948, Varsoda was integrated into the Bombay Province. Following the linguistic reorganization of Indian states in 1960, the region became part of the newly formed state of Gujarat. Today, Varsoda is a historical village located in the Gandhinagar district, known for its rich heritage, ancient temples, and the remnants of its royal palace, which attract history enthusiasts from across the region.
