History
The Sukheda Thikana (historically recorded as Sunkhera), situated in the fertile Malwa region of modern-day Madhya Pradesh, was a prominent estate ruled by the illustrious Dodiya (Dodia) clan of Rajputs. Tracing their ancestral lineage back to Kathiawar in Gujarat and later to the historic Mewar State (where they famously held the estate of Sardargarh), the Dodiya Rajputs established their authority in Malwa during the twilight of the Mughal Empire. Throughout the turbulent 18th and 19th centuries, the rulers of Sukheda successfully navigated the shifting geopolitics of central India, maintaining their autonomy under the suzerainty of the Maratha Scindia dynasty of Gwalior and subsequently securing their status as a guaranteed Thikana under the British Malwa Agency. Following India's independence in 1947, the estate merged into the Union of India, first becoming a part of the Madhya Bharat province and later integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh.
