Origin and Ancestry of the Gaur Rajputs of Gouravati

The Gaur (or Gour) Rajputs are an ancient clan of the Suryavanshi lineage, traditionally associated with the historical region of Gauda (Bengal), from where they migrated to Rajputana. The Legend and Foundation of Sopra Jagir

The establishment of the Sopra Jagir is a classic testament to Rajput marksmanship and the martial patronage of the Marwar Darbar. During the reign of His Highness Maharaja Jaswant Singh II of Marwar (who ruled from 1873 to 1895), the village of Sopra was granted as a Jagir (fiefdom) to the Gaur Rajputs of Maroth.

According to regional court chronicles and the oral traditions preserved by the local genealogists (Rao's), Maharaja Jaswant Singh II issued a challenge to the nobles and marksmen assembled at the Jodhpur court: whoever could successfully shoot down an owl in the pitch dark of night would be bestowed with the estate of Sopra. The remarkable challenge was accepted by Giridhari Singhji Gaur, a celebrated marksman of the Gaur clan. Demonstrating extraordinary focus and sensory skill, Giridhari Singhji successfully struck the target on his very first attempt. Impressed by this feat of archery and marksmanship, the Maharaja publicly honored him, conferred upon him the title of Thakur Saheb, and formally granted him the Sopra Jagir.

Martial Contributions during the Marwar State Period

Following its establishment, the chieftains of Sopra remained loyal feudatories to the Jodhpur Gadi. The region of Marwar during the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries was actively involved in British colonial treaties, internal security, and boundary settlements. The Thakurs of Sopra, most notably Thakur Shri Giridhari Singhji and his successor Thakur Shri Nathu Singhji, were renowned for their bravery and leadership. They led local levies and contributed military service to the Jodhpur State forces during various regional conflicts and security campaigns under the British Raj, upholding the martial traditions of the Gaur clan.

Post-Independence and the Modern Era

With India securing independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states, the Jodhpur State merged into the United State of Greater Rajasthan. Under the historic Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952, the traditional Jagirdari land tenure system was democratically abolished. Consequently, the administrative powers of the Sopra estate were transitioned to the civil government of Rajasthan.

Today, the descendants of the Sopra Jagir preserve their heritage and ancestral history while actively participating in modern public life, defense services, and local agriculture.
