Sirmathura

Foundation and Clan Origin

The ruling family of Sirmathura belongs to the illustrious Jadon (Yaduwanshi) Rajput dynasty, claiming direct lineage from the royal house of Karauli. The Thikana was founded by Maharaj Mukat Rao (also known as Mukat Das), the younger son of Maharaja Gopal Das of Karauli, who ruled during the late 16^th century and was a contemporary of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Maharaj Mukat Rao established Sirmathura as an independent principality. His descendants came to be known as the Muktawat Jadons, establishing a distinct and prestigious branch of the Jadon clan in the region.

Transition under Dholpur State

For generations, Sirmathura maintained its autonomy, closely tied by bloodlines and alliances to Karauli. However, during the turbulent geopolitical shifts of the late 18^th and early 19^th centuries, marked by the Maratha expansions and the eventual British hegemony, the political boundaries of Rajputana were redrawn. Consequently, Sirmathura came under the suzerainty of the Bamraulia Jat rulers of Dholpur.

Despite this transition, the Rao of Sirmathura maintained immense respect and authority. Within the court of the Maharaja of Dholpur, the Rao of Sirmathura held the highest status among the nobility, ranking first in the Order of Precedence (Tazimi Sirdar) in the Dholpur Darbar.

Socio-Economic Importance and Heritage

Geographically, the estate was strategically positioned and blessed with abundant natural resources, most notably the famous local red sandstone. This high-quality stone was historically exported for the construction of monumental architecture throughout Northern India during the Mughal and British periods. According to historical records in the Imperial Gazetteer of India, the estate thrived on its stone quarries and agricultural revenues, governing 36 villages across an area of 400 square kilometers.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

With India attaining independence in 1947, Dholpur State, including the Thikana of Sirmathura, merged to form the Matsya Union in 1948, which was later integrated into the state of Rajasthan in 1949. With the abolition of the jagirdari system and feudal privileges, the administrative powers of the Thikana were transferred to the democratic government. Today, Sirmathura is recognized as an important town and subdivision in the Dholpur district of Rajasthan, highly regarded for its stone industry and its deep-rooted historical heritage.
