History
The Sihora Zamindari, situated in the historic Baiswara region of Oudh (encompassing parts of modern-day Unnao and Rae Bareli districts in Uttar Pradesh), was a notable estate held by the Bais clan of Rajputs, who traditionally trace their lineage back to the legendary ancient monarch Shalivahana. Under local chieftains who claimed descent from Raja Abhai Chand, the Bais Rajputs consolidated their authority throughout the medieval period, maintaining substantial administrative and military autonomy under both the Mughal Empire and the Nawabs of Awadh. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Baiswara chieftains actively resisted British colonial forces, which subsequently led to a restructuring of their estates under the British land settlement policies as detailed in the historical Gazetteer of the Province of Oudh. The Sihora estate retained its local influence and agrarian prominence until the formal abolition of the zamindari system post-independence via the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition Act of 1950.
