Shankhwali

Origin and Lineage

Shankhwali (also spelled Sankhwali) is a prominent estate (Thikana) of the Sindhal Rathore clan, located in the historical region of Marwar within the modern-day Jalor district of Rajasthan. The Sindhal Rathores are a distinguished cadet branch of the Rathore dynasty, tracing their lineage back to Rao Sindhal, a legendary warrior prince and son of Rao Asthan of Marwar. The rulers of Shankhwali branched out from the parent house of Kawla, establishing themselves as key feudatories under the sovereign state of Jodhpur.

Historical Significance and Modern Era

As nobles of the Marwar State, the Thakurs of Shankhwali played an active role in the military and administrative affairs of the region. They held their land on a feudal tenure (Jagir), rendering military service to the Maharaja of Jodhpur when summoned and overseeing the governance of their local peasantry. This feudal system remained active throughout the Mughal and British protectorate eras. Following India's independence, the princely state of Jodhpur acceded to the Indian Union, and the Shankhwali estate was integrated into the state of Rajasthan following the abolition of the Jagirdari system in the early 1950s.
