History

Origin and Ancestral Roots in Gujarat

The Solanki dynasty of Sansari trace their illustrious lineage back to the legendary Chalukyas (Solankis) of Anhilwara (modern-day Patan, Gujarat). The ancestors of this house are direct descendants of Raja Tribhuvanpal, who was the last reigning Solanki monarch of Gujarat (r. 1241–1244 CE) before the Vaghela dynasty assumed control. Following the decline of their sovereign power in Gujarat towards the end of the 15th century, the Solankis were compelled to migrate northward in search of new territories and to preserve their royal heritage.

Under the leadership of Raja Deepa Singh Solanki, the family migrated and initially settled near Bhinai in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan. Seeking to expand their influence, Thakur Bhoj Singh later led a migration to Lach village in the Sirohi state. This expansion led to a bitter, protracted conflict with the Rao of Sirohi. After fighting seventeen fierce battles, Thakur Bhoj Singh was killed in the final encounter, and the Sirohi state took control of Lach village.

Migration to Mewar and the Acquisition of Desuri

Dispossessed of their lands in Sirohi, the Solankis sought refuge in the kingdom of Mewar during the reign of Maharana Raimal (r. 1473–1509 CE). The Maharana welcomed the martial clan and recognized their military prowess. At the time, the strategic frontier region of Godwar was plagued by lawlessness, primarily due to the rebellion of the Madrecha Chauhan Rajputs who defied the authority of the Mewar crown.

Maharana Raimal tasked the Solankis with subduing the rebellious Madrechas. Upon successfully ridding the district of the insurgents, the Maharana granted the Solanki clan the strategic pargana of Desuri (also known as Roopnagar), along with 363 villages encompassing the fertile Godwar region and parts of Mewar. This grant firmly established the Solankis as premier nobles (Thakurs) of the Mewar State.

The Siryari Branch and the Battle of Desuri

As the family expanded, Thakur Sanwant Singh partitioned his extensive estate among his sons to ensure efficient administration. His son, Thakur Khet Singh, received Siryari as his appanage (jagir). This branch of the family remained deeply loyal to the Maharanas of Udaipur and acted as a shield for Mewar's western frontier.

During the Mughal era, as the Mughal empire allied with the neighboring state of Jodhpur (Marwar) to assert dominance over Rajasthan, the Godwar region became a major flashpoint. In a historic battle near the Desuri pass, Thakur Khet Singh and his son, Thakur Sanga Singh, fought valiantly against the joint military forces of the Mughal Empire and the Jodhpur State. Both father and son achieved martyrdom on the battlefield, defending the sovereignty of Mewar and the honor of their clan.

The Establishment and Significance of Sansari Thikana

Sansari emerged as a prominent Thikana (noble estate) branching out from this brave lineage of Solanki Rajputs. Nestled within the historic Godwar tract, Sansari was held by the descendants of the Desuri and Siryari houses. The Thakurs of Sansari maintained administrative autonomy over their estate while rendering military service (Chakri) to the Maharana of Udaipur. The estate was characterized by its traditional Rajput architecture, fortresses, and patronage of local temples.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

With India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of the princely states of Rajputana into the United State of Rajasthan, the administrative and judicial powers of the Sansari Thikana were formally dissolved under the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952.

Despite the loss of feudal privileges, the royal family of Sansari transitioned successfully into modern democratic India. Today, the descendants of the Sansari Thikana continue to reside in the region, preserving their rich ancestral heritage, historical records, and traditional customs, while actively contributing to local agricultural, social, and political developments in Rajasthan.
