History
Origin and Foundation of Samuja Thikana
Samuja is a prominent feudal estate (Thikana) belonging to the Udawat clan of the Rathore dynasty, situated near the historic town of Jalore in the western region of Rajasthan. The Udawat sub-clan of the Rathores traces its lineage back to Rao Uda (Udayasingh), a valiant warrior and the son of Rao Suja, the ruler of Jodhpur (Marwar) who reigned from 1492 to 1515. Known for their military prowess and fierce independence, the descendants of Rao Uda established several key estates across Marwar, with Samuja emerging as an influential seat near the strategic borderlands of Jalore.
Historical Significance and Marwar Relations
During the medieval era, Jalore and its surrounding territories were highly contested frontiers. The Udawat Rajputs of Samuja served as crucial military guardians for the Jodhpur State, protecting the trade routes and defending the southern marches against incursions. Throughout the Mughal era and subsequent British paramountcy, the Thakurs of Samuja maintained their traditional feudal obligations (Chakri) to the Maharaja of Jodhpur. They contributed cavalry contingents and resources to the state's defense, cementing their status among the respected nobles of the Jodhpur durbar.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of the princely state of Jodhpur into the United State of Rajasthan, the administrative authority of the Thikana was dissolved. With the passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952, the traditional land tenure and revenue-collecting rights of the Jagirdars were abolished. Today, the descendants of the Samuja Thikana reside as private citizens, preserving their rich cultural heritage, ancestral fortresses, and patronage of local temples, remaining highly respected figures within the socio-cultural fabric of the Jalore district.
