History
Ramsar Thikana, situated in the arid terrain near Barmer in the historic Malani region of western Rajasthan, was a prominent estate ruled by the Mahecha Rathores, a venerated sub-clan of the Rathore dynasty that traces its lineage to the legendary 14th-century warrior-saint Rawal Mallinath of Mehwa. As guardians of this strategic desert frontier, the Mahecha rulers of Ramsar maintained a highly autonomous status, frequently defending their borders from regional incursions and navigating complex political relationships with the neighboring Kingdom of Jodhpur (Marwar). During the British colonial era, Ramsar's local administration was closely tied to the Malani superintendency established by the British to stabilize the turbulent borderlands, culminating in its peaceful integration into independent India in 1947, where it now exists as a vibrant tehsil in the Barmer district, keeping alive its rich legacy of Rajput chivalry and cultural heritage.
