History

The Rampur Madho estate, situated in the Pratapgarh region of Awadh (modern-day Uttar Pradesh), was a prominent taluqdari historically held by the Sombansi clan, a major branch of the Chandrabansi (Lunar) dynasty of Rajputs. Tracing their lineage back to the ancient lunar rulers of Pratishthana, the Sombansis established their dominance in the region during the medieval period, constructing strongholds and patronizing local development. During the British Raj, following the annexation of Oudh, the taluqdars of Rampur Madho were formally recognized under the Oudh Estates Act, preserving their administrative and revenue-collecting authority over their ancestral lands until the post-independence abolition of the zamindari system in 1951. For further reading on the historical land tenure and clans of this region, consult the Pratapgarh District Gazetteer.
