History
Origin and Foundation of Rajpur Taluk
The Rajpur Taluk was established in 1775 by the Jhala Rajputs, a prominent and historic clan that dominated the Jhalawar region of Kathiawar in modern-day Gujarat. The Jhala dynasty traces its ancestry back to the legendary Harapaldevji, with the primary ruling branch establishing its capital at Dhrangadhra. Over the centuries, various cadet branches of the family branched off to establish smaller estates, known as talukas, to manage local administration and defense. Rajpur was founded as one such independent princely estate in the late 18th century, maintaining its distinct identity within the Jhalawar prant.
British Colonial Era and Judicial Administration
During the British Raj, the political landscape of the region was organized under the Kathiawar Agency. To streamline colonial governance, the British classified the numerous Kathiawar states into seven distinct classes based on their revenue, land area, and political influence. Rajpur was designated as a Sixth Class state. Consequently, the jurisdictional powers of the Talukdar of Rajpur were strictly limited by the British political administration. The state was authorized to decide civil matters up to a value of 500 Rupees, while its criminal jurisdiction was restricted to awarding three months of rigorous imprisonment and imposing fines up to 200 Rupees. Any legal disputes or serious offenses exceeding these limits were referred to the court of the British Political Agent.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence and the lapse of British paramountcy in 1947, the ruling Jhala Talukdar of Rajpur signed the Instrument of Accession to join the Dominion of India. In February 1948, the estate was formally integrated into the United State of Kathiawar, which was later renamed Saurashtra State. Following the States Reorganisation Act and the subsequent linguistic split of Bombay State in 1960, Rajpur became part of the Surendranagar district in the state of Gujarat. Today, the legacy of the Jhala rulers of Rajpur survives in the local history, traditions, and historical landmarks of the Saurashtra region.
