History

Origin and Foundation

The history of the Parla Khimedi (or Parlakhemundi) Zamindari is deeply intertwined with the royal lineage of the Gajapati and Eastern Ganga dynasties of Odisha. Located in the picturesque southern portion of the Ganjam district, this ancient estate was founded in the 14th century by Kolahala, a prince of the royal Ganga dynasty. According to historical accounts and local traditions, the state's foundation is also associated with Sibalinga Narayan Dev, a younger son of the illustrious Suryavamsi Gajapati Emperor, Kapilendra Deva of Odisha. Over the centuries, the rulers of Parlakhemundi retained their distinct identity as direct descendants of the medieval sovereigns of Odisha, preserving the rich cultural and military traditions of the Odia region in the borderlands of the Madras Presidency.

The Zamindari under British Administration

During the British colonial period, Parlakhemundi emerged as one of the most prominent and influential Zamindari estates under the Madras Presidency. Bound by the Vizagapatam district on the west and the rugged Eastern Ghats (the Maliyas or tribal agency tracts) on the north, the estate occupied a strategic position. The region witnessed several periods of unrest and resistance against British encroachment, most notably during the late 18th century. Local chieftains and tribal communities frequently rallied under the banner of the Gajapati Rajas to protect their autonomy. Due to administrative struggles and financial issues, the estate was placed under the management of the British Court of Wards at various times, which led to the modernization of its revenue, forest, and educational systems.

The Golden Era of Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati

The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a renaissance for Parlakhemundi under the visionary leadership of Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Dev (1892–1974). A highly educated and progressive ruler, he is widely regarded as one of the makers of modern Odisha. Under his patronage, the estate flourished in the fields of education, agriculture, and industry. He established the prestigious SKCG College (originally Maharaja's College) and built the Parlakhemundi Light Railway to connect the region with the main line of the Bengal Nagpur Railway.

Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati was a leading figure in the Utkal Sammilani movement, which advocated for the creation of a separate province for Odia-speaking people. He represented the cause of the Odia community at the Round Table Conferences in London and successfully negotiated the creation of a unified Odisha province on linguistic lines on April 1, 1936. Consequently, he served as the first Prime Minister of the newly formed Odisha Province.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947, the Parlakhemundi Zamindari was formally merged with the Indian Union. In recognition of the historic contributions of the ruling dynasty and the cultural significance of the region, the Government of Odisha carved out a separate district in 1992, naming it the Gajapati District with Parlakhemundi as its administrative headquarters.

Today, the legacy of the Parla Khimedi rulers is preserved in the grand architecture of the Gajapati Palace, their extensive educational institutions, and the enduring respect of the local population. The historical narratives of this frontier estate continue to be celebrated as a vital chapter in the cultural and political integration of Odisha.
