History
Origin and History of Neem Ka Khera Thikana
Neem Ka Khera is a prominent historical Thikana (feudal estate) belonging to the illustrious Mertiya Rathore clan of Rajputs. The Mertiyas are a major sub-clan of the Rathores of Marwar, tracing their descent from Rao Duda, the ruler of Merta and son of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. The family of Neem Ka Khera traces its direct lineage to the legendary warrior Rao Jaimal Rathore of Merta, who gained immortal fame for his heroic defense of Chittorgarh Fort against the Mughal forces of Emperor Akbar in 1567–1568. Following these historic battles, the descendants of Rao Jaimal were granted premier estates in the Mewar region by the Maharanas of Udaipur, with Badnore being the principal seat, from which Neem Ka Khera emerged as a significant offshoot.
Role in Mewar and Historical Significance
As noble vassals of the Maharana of Udaipur, the chiefs of Neem Ka Khera held administrative and military responsibilities under the Mewar State. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the Mertiya Rathores of this region actively participated in the defense of Mewar during wars against the Mughals and the Marathas. The rulers of the Thikana maintained a strong tradition of martial valor, while also contributing to the socio-cultural fabric of their estate through the patronage of local temples, agricultural development, and community welfare.
Post-Independence Era
Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of the princely states into the Indian Union, the Jagirdari system was abolished under land reform acts. The royal lineage of Neem Ka Khera successfully transitioned into modern democratic India. Today, the descendants of the estate are engaged in modern professions, agriculture, and business, while diligently preserving their ancestral heritage, historical fort, and cultural traditions in the Bhilwara region of Rajasthan.
