History
In the aftermath of the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761—a pivotal conflict that reshaped the political landscape of North India—numerous noble lineages suffered immense losses in their resistance against the invading forces of Ahmad Shah Abdali. Among the valiant defenders were the Tanwar Rajputs of Patan, renowned for their martial tradition and unwavering loyalty to their land and dharma.
One of the distinguished figures of this lineage, Thakur Gmani Singh Tanwar, rose to prominence during this turbulent period. Accepting the call of duty, he launched a strategic resistance against the Turkic forces at Lal Choutra, the traditional seat of Madhad Rajput authority. For the purpose of this mission, he established his operational base at Rajound Garhi, located in present-day Haryana.
During a fierce engagement, Thakur Gmani Singh attained martyrdom in battle. According to oral traditions and Rajput folklore, he continued to fight with extraordinary valor even after being beheaded—a legendary act that exemplifies the highest ideals of Rajput bravery and sacrifice.
Following his death, his wife committed Sati, the ancient Rajput practice of self-immolation, at Garhi, on the banks of the sacred Tirth, thereby immortalizing her devotion and fidelity.
In the wake of this tragic yet heroic episode, Kunwar Nana Singh and Kunwar Budh Singh, believed to be the successors or close kin of Thakur Gmani Singh, began their return to Patan. En route, they received royal recognition from the ruling monarch of Jind, who, impressed by the family's valor and sacrifice, bestowed upon them a jagir (land grant) comprising two villages, including Narwal, as a gesture of honor and respect.
This episode not only highlights the enduring spirit of the Tanwar Rajputs during one of the most challenging periods in Indian history but also serves as a testament to the legacy of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice passed down through generations.
