History

Origin and Lineage

The rulers of the Mauhari Jagir belong to the Baghela clan of Rajputs, a branch of the Solanki (Chalukya) dynasty. The Baghelas established their rule in the region of Baghelkhand (modern-day Madhya Pradesh) in the 13th century under Vyaghra Dev. Over the centuries, several junior branches of the ruling family of Rewa were granted landed estates, known as Thikanas or Jagirs, for their military services and administrative loyalty. The family of Mauhari trace their immediate lineage back to the Zamindari of Jarauha, an established estate under the Rewa State administration.

The British and Rewa State Era

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Rewa State operated as a princely state under the British Raj's Central India Agency. The reign of Maharaja Sir Venkat Raman Ramanuj Prasad Singh (1880–1918) was marked by administrative reforms, infrastructural development, and a keen interest in wildlife conservation and managed hunting. The grant of the Mauhari Jagir during this period highlights the feudal system of rewards practiced by the Rewa Darbar, where courage and services to the state were rewarded with land revenue rights (Jagirdari).

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Rewa acceded to the Union of India, initially becoming part of the Vindhya Pradesh province, which was later merged into the state of Madhya Pradesh in 1956. With the passage of the Madhya Pradesh Abolition of Proprietary Rights Act in 1950, formal jagirdari rights and land revenues were abolished. The descendants of Thakur Roshan Singh transitioned into modern Indian society, adapting to agriculture, education, and public service, while continuing to preserve the cultural heritage and history of the Baghela dynasty in the region.
