History
Origin and Foundation of the Jagir
The Mankeshar Jagir represents a prominent cadet branch of the illustrious Baghela dynasty, which ruled the princely state of Rewah. The Baghelas are a branch of the Solanki (Chaulukya) clan of Rajputs who migrated to the Baghelkhand region in the 13th century. The foundation of the Mankeshar estate traces its lineage back to Maharaja Anoop Singh Ju Deo of Rewah, who ruled from 1643 to 1660.
Over the subsequent generations, sub-branches of the royal family established smaller estates or Pawais (fiefdoms) to manage the vast territories of the kingdom. Kunwar Kesari Singh, a son of Maharaja Anoop Singh, was granted the Ramnagar Estate. His descendants later established the Deora (Deoraj Nagar) Estate. In 1780, the Mankeshar Jagir was formally carved out and granted to Kunwar Rachpal Singh Ju Deo, marking the beginning of the Mankeshar branch of the Baghela Rajputs.
Feudal Administration and the British Raj
During the late 18th and 19th centuries, the Jagirdars of Mankeshar exercised administrative, judicial, and revenue-collecting authority over their allotted villages, functioning under the suzerainty of the Maharaja of Rewah. Like other feudal lords (Pawaidars) in Baghelkhand, the family maintained close ties with the Rewah Durbar, contributing military levies and financial tributes (Nazarana) when required.
Following the treaties between the State of Rewah and the British East India Company in 1812 and 1813, the region came under British protection. Under the British Raj, the Jagir of Mankeshar remained relatively autonomous in its internal affairs, subject to the overarching supervision of the Rewah State Durbar and the Central India Agency. The family focused on maintaining agricultural stability, local temple patronage, and traditional justice systems within their estate.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewah signed the Instrument of Accession, leading to the merger of Rewah State into the newly formed state of Vindhya Pradesh in 1948. Subsequently, Vindhya Pradesh was integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh in 1956 under the States Reorganisation Act.
With the implementation of the Madhya Pradesh Abolition of Jagirs Act and subsequent land reform legislations, the feudal privileges, land revenues, and administrative powers of the Mankeshar Jagir were formally abolished. The descendants of the Mankeshar ruling family transitioned into modern democratic India, retaining their ancestral properties, fort remnants, and historical legacy while engaging in agriculture, public service, and local leadership.
