History

Origin and Foundation

The Thikana of Maidas, a prominent estate of the Mertia Rathore clan, was established in 1836 AD. The estate was granted to Kunwar Shyam Singh, a noble hailing from the illustrious House of Rian (Riyan). The Mertia Rathores are the descendants of Rao Duda, the son of Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur), who carved out a powerful principality at Merta. The House of Rian stood as one of the premier Sirayat (first-class noble) estates of the Jodhpur State. The grant of Maidas to Kunwar Shyam Singh during the reign of Maharaja Man Singh of Marwar marked the expansion of this lineage, establishing a new localized seat of Mertia influence.

The British Era and Feudal Administration

Following the treaty of 1818 between the East India Company and the Kingdom of Marwar, the region entered an era of Pax Britannica. As a vassal estate under the Jodhpur State, the Thakur of Maidas was responsible for maintaining local law and order, collecting land revenue, and fulfilling feudal obligations (such as the payment of Rekh and providing military service when summoned by the Darbar). The Thakurs of Maidas successfully balanced their loyalty to the Jodhpur crown while maintaining close familial and political ties with their parent house of Rian.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947, the state of Jodhpur merged into the newly formed union of Rajasthan. With the enactment of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in the early 1950s, the official feudal privileges, land revenues, and judicial powers of the Maidas Thikana were abolished. Today, the descendants of Kunwar Shyam Singh carry forward the cultural legacy, historical traditions, and societal contributions of the Mertia Rathores in modern India.
