History

Origin and Ancestry

The ruling lineage of Lotiyana belongs to the Solanki clan of Rajputs, who trace their roots back to the legendary Chalukyas of the Deccan and the imperial Solankis of Gujarat (Anhilwara). Following the decline of Solanki hegemony in Gujarat, several branches migrated north and east into the rugged terrains of Rajasthan.

A major branch established itself at Toda (in modern-day Tonk). Following the loss of Toda to the Sultanate of Malwa, the Solanki clansmen dispersed to various regions to carve out new estates. The ancestors of the Lotiyana house migrated toward the southwestern frontiers of Mewar, seeking patronage and offering their martial services to the local rulers.

Establishment in Godwar and Mewar Patronage

The Thikana of Lotiyana is located in the historic Godwar region, a strategic frontier belt situated at the foothills of the Aravalli Range. Recognizing the tactical importance of guarding the mountain passes connecting the plains of Marwar to the valley of Mewar, the Maharana of Mewar granted the fief of Lotiyana to Thakur Shiv Singh ji Saheb in the 15th century.

As feudal vassals of Mewar, the Solankis of Lotiyana played a crucial role in maintaining security along the Desuri Nal (pass), a vital military and trade route. Their position demanded constant vigil against incursions and banditry, cementing their reputation as fierce warriors.

The Marwar Period and Feudal Conflicts

For generations, Godwar remained under the administrative and military control of Udaipur. However, in 1770, during a period of internal instability and Maratha incursions in Mewar, Maharana Ari Singh II handed over the administration of the Godwar region to Maharaja Vijay Singh of Marwar (Jodhpur) in exchange for military assistance. Consequently, the chieftains of Lotiyana transitioned into vassals of the Rathore rulers of Jodhpur.

This transition did not come without friction. Feudal rivalries with Rathore sub-clans occasionally escalated into armed conflicts. One such notable clash occurred when Thakur Tej Pratap Singh ji Saheb of Lotiyana valiantly defended the strategic fort of Desuri against the forces of Champawat Jait Singh. Thakur Tej Pratap Singh ji achieved martyrdom on the battlefield, securing his place in local folklore and bardic history.

British Raj and Modern Era

With the signing of the treaty of subsidiary alliance between the East India Company and the Jodhpur State in 1818, the region entered a period of relative peace. The rulers of Lotiyana adapted to the changing times, transitioning from active frontier warfare to administrative and agrarian management.

The martial tradition of the house remained intact, however. During the early 20th century, Thakur Sardar Singh ji of Lotiyana served with distinction and participated in the First World War (1914–1918), continuing the family's legacy of military service on a global stage.

Post-Independence and Legacy

Following India’s independence in 1947, the princely state of Jodhpur merged into the United State of Greater Rajasthan in 1949. The passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952 brought an end to the traditional jagirdari and feudal system.

Today, the descendants of the Lotiyana Thikana reside as citizens of democratic India, actively engaging in agriculture, business, and community welfare while carefully preserving their ancestral heritage, historical records, and the memory of their warrior ancestors in the Pali district of Rajasthan.
