History
Historical Context and Association with Idar State
The destiny of the Khambhisar Thikana is deeply intertwined with the history of Idar State, the premier princely state of the Mahi Kantha Agency. Following the military campaigns that established Rathore hegemony in the region during the 18th century, the rulers of Idar relied heavily on their loyal feudal lords, known as Patavats or Sardars. The Govindasot Jodha Rathores, through their ancestral seat at Medhasan, formed the vanguard of Idar's military defense against local chieftains and external Maratha incursions.
According to historical records compiled in the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, the feudal structure of Idar classified its nobles into distinct ranks. The lords of Medhasan (and subsequently their offshoot at Khambhisar) held a prominent position among these feudal chiefs, exercising local judicial and administrative authority within their respective territories while maintaining feudal obligations to the Maharaja of Idar.
The British Raj and Feudal Administration
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, under the British Raj, the Khambhisar estate adapted to the administrative frameworks established by the Mahi Kantha Agency. The "Panchratna" status of Khambhisar, representing a cluster of five sovereign-grant villages, allowed the thikana to manage local agrarian economies, patronize regional temples, and maintain a traditional lifestyle centered around Rajput chivalry and community governance.
Post-Independence Era and Modern Legacy
With the departure of the British and the signing of the Instrument of Accession by Maharaja Himmat Singhji of Idar, the state of Idar merged into the Indian Union on June 10, 1948. Consequently, the princely privileges and jagirdari rights of the Khambhisar Thikana were phased out following the implementation of the Gujarat Land Reforms Jagir Abolition Acts in the early 1950s.
Today, the descendants of the Khambhisar Thikana reside in Gujarat and Rajasthan, preserving their rich ancestral legacy. They remain actively involved in conserving their heritage, supporting local community initiatives, and maintaining the worship of their ancestral deity, Nagneshwari Mataji, and the shrines of their legendary ancestors.
