Ilol

Origin and Ancestral Lineage

The historical origins of the ruling house of Ilol present an intriguing blend of Rajput genealogy and regional socio-political evolution. According to traditional Rajput chronicles, the family traces its lineage back to Kumar Shri Vijaypal, the second son of Raja Kesar Dev (also known as Keshav Dev) of Kerantigadh (around 1089 AD), who belonged to the Makwana branch. This line eventually came to be identified with the prestigious Jhala dynasty of Gujarat and Kathiawar.

During the colonial era, British ethnographers and administrators recorded differing perspectives on the state's ruling clan. While the rulers maintained their descent from the Jhala Rajputs, publications such as The Golden Book of India by Sir Roper Lethbridge and colonial gazetteers often classified the ruling family of Ilol as Makwana Kolis. This dual classification highlights the complex, overlapping nature of Rajput and Koli identities in medieval and early modern Gujarat, where dominant Makwana clans frequently bridged these social boundaries through political power and matrimonial alliances.

The Colonial Era and British Administration

During the British Raj, Ilol was recognized as a petty princely state or Thikana located within the Mahi Kantha Agency of the Bombay Presidency. It operated under a political arrangement where the state paid annual tributes (known as toka or jama) to both the Gaekwad of Baroda and the Maharaja of Idar.

The state was classified under the jurisdictional hierarchy of the Mahi Kantha Agency, where the Thakor Saheb of Ilol exercised limited civil and criminal judicial powers. The administration was heavily supervised by the British Political Agent stationed at Sadra. Despite its relatively small size, Ilol maintained its administrative autonomy in internal matters and was known for maintaining local law and order in its designated villages.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in August 1947, the last ruler of Ilol signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the state into the Indian Union. On June 10, 1948, the state formally integrated with the Bombay Province during the consolidation of the minor states of the Mahi Kantha Agency.

With the linguistic reorganization of Indian states in 1960, the territory of the former Ilol State became part of the Himatnagar Taluka in the Sabarkantha District of the newly formed state of Gujarat. Today, the historical legacy of the Ilol Thikana survives in the local heritage of the region, and the descendants of the ruling family continue to be respected members of the local community.
