History
The Hemgir (or Himgir) Zamindari, situated in the present-day Sundargarh district of Odisha, was an influential estate ruled by a branch of the Chauhan Rajput clan under the suzerainty of the princely Gangpur State. Established to secure the western borders of Gangpur, the zamindars of Hemgir maintained a feudal structure, managing local revenue administration and judicial affairs while paying tribute to the Gangpur Durbar. During the British colonial era, the estate gained economic prominence due to its extensive forest tracts and rich mineral wealth, which eventually led to the exploration of the Himgir coalfields. Following India's independence, the Hemgir estate was integrated into the Indian Union in 1948 alongside the parent state of Gangpur, officially dissolving the zamindari system and transitioning the region into a modern administrative tehsil of Odisha.
