History
Gogunda, a premier first-class thikana (noble estate) of the princely state of Mewar, was ruled by the distinguished Jhala clan of Rajputs who traced their lineage back to the royal house of Kathiawar and were closely aligned with the Jhala houses of Delwara and Sadri. This strategic province holds immense historical significance in Rajput history, most notably serving as the temporary capital of Mewar and the historic venue where Maharana Pratap was crowned in 1572 CE following the death of his father, Maharana Udai Singh II. The Jhala chieftains of Gogunda, who held the hereditary title of Raj, were positioned among the elite Solah Umraos (sixteen senior nobles) of the Udaipur Durbar, consistently demonstrating heroic loyalty to the Sisodia dynasty by defending the Mewar state during crucial military conflicts, including the iconic Battle of Haldighati against the Mughal Empire.
