History

Origin and Foundation

The Gadhka Taluka, situated in the historic Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat, was established as an offshoot of the princely state of Rajkot. The ruling family belongs to the Jadeja clan of Rajputs, who trace their ancestry back to the legendary Jam Lakha Jadeja. The foundation of Gadhka as an independent estate occurred during the reign of Thakore Saheb Ranmalji Mehramanji of Rajkot (who ruled in the early 19th century). Ranmalji had four sons, among whom the state's territory was partitioned to provide appanages (giras).

The second son, Vajeraji, was granted the estate of Gadhka. However, Vajeraji's lineage faced a succession crisis when his son died without leaving a male heir. Consequently, in accordance with the customary laws of the Jadeja clan, the Gadhka Taluka was inherited by the third son of Thakore Saheb Ranmalji, Akherajji. Akherajji had previously received the estate of Makhawad, and with this transition, the two estates were closely linked. The state strictly adhered to the rule of primogeniture to govern subsequent successions to the gadi (throne).

British Period and Administration

During the British Raj, Gadhka was classified as a Fifth Class state under the Kathiawar Agency, which later became part of the Western India States Agency. As a semi-jurisdictional taluka, its rulers exercised limited judicial authority. The jurisdictional powers vested in the taluka were categorized into criminal and civil domains:

  • Criminal Jurisdiction: Power to award up to two years of rigorous imprisonment and impose fines up to 2,000 Rupees.
  • Civil Jurisdiction: Authority to hear and decide cases up to the value of 5,000 Rupees.

The taluka comprised approximately six villages, covering an area of roughly 23 square miles. Like many other small states in the Halar division of Kathiawar, Gadhka paid annual tributes (peshkash) to both the British government and the Gaekwad of Baroda, administered through the British political agents based at Rajkot. Historical records in the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency (Kathiawar) highlight that the agricultural economy of Gadhka was primarily dependent on cotton, millet, and wheat cultivation, supported by local well-irrigation systems.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in August 1947, the last ruler of Gadhka signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the estate into the Dominion of India. In February 1948, Gadhka was integrated into the United State of Kathiawar, which later came to be known as the Saurashtra State. With the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, Saurashtra was merged into the bilingual Bombay State, and subsequently, upon the linguistic partition of Bombay in 1960, Gadhka became a part of the newly formed state of Gujarat. Today, the territory of the former Gadhka Taluka is situated within the Rajkot district, preserving its historical heritage through its local monuments and ancestral lineage.
