Origin and Foundation of Dedhrota

Dedhrota was a minor princely state located in the historic Mahi Kantha region of Gujarat, India. The state was ruled by the Jhala dynasty, a prominent clan of Rajputs who trace their lineage back to the Makwana rulers of Saurashtra. The Jhala Rajputs of the Mahi Kantha region, including those of Dedhrota, originally branched out from the parent houses of Halvad and Limbdi, establishing smaller estates (talukas) through partitions and feudal grants in the plains surrounding the Sabarmati river basin.

British Period and Classification

During the early 19^th century, the expansion of the British East India Company led to the pacification of the turbulent Mahi Kantha region. In 1812, under the mediation of British officer Major Ballantyne, the local chiefs of Mahi Kantha negotiated settlements to secure peace and regularize tribute payments. The Thakur of Dedhrota signed security bonds (Failsafal), acknowledging British suzerainty and agreeing to pay annual tribute (Ghasdana) to the Gaekwad of Baroda through the British political administration.

Under the British administrative hierarchy, Dedhrota was classified as a Sixth Class state within the Mahi Kantha Agency of the Bombay Presidency. Due to its limited territorial size and modest revenue, the ruling Thakurs exercised restricted judicial powers. They held jurisdiction over minor civil disputes and petty criminal offenses, while serious criminal cases and capital offenses were referred to the court of the British Political Agent stationed at Sadra.

Administration and Rulers

The state was governed by hereditary rulers who held the title of Thakur (or Thakore). The economy of Dedhrota was primarily agrarian, with land revenue from local crops being the chief source of income for the state treasury. Despite its modest resources, the ruling family maintained traditional Rajput customs, patronized local temples, and supported the socio-religious welfare of their subjects.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in August 1947, the ruling Thakur of Dedhrota signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the state into the Dominion of India. Under the administrative integration spearheaded by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the state was formally merged into the Bombay Province in 1948.

With the subsequent linguistic reorganization of Indian states in 1960, the territory of the former Dedhrota state became a part of the Sabarkantha district in the newly formed state of Gujarat. Today, the legacy of the Dedhrota state is preserved in local oral traditions and the genealogical records of the Jhala Rajput clan.
