History
Origin and Foundation
The historical lineage of the Daulatpur Jagir is deeply intertwined with the royal house of the Rathore dynasty of Jodhpur State (Marwar). The foundation of this aristocratic family traces back to its prominent ancestor, Raja Bairisal of Jodhpur, who flourished around 1550 CE. This period corresponds to the illustrious reign of Rao Maldeo Rathore of Marwar, an era characterized by the expansion of Rathore influence and the consolidation of various thikanas (feudal estates) across the region.
Under the traditional Rajput clan system, younger sons and meritorious kinsmen of the ruling Maharaja were granted land assignments, known as patta or jagir, in exchange for military allegiance and administrative service. The descendants of Raja Bairisal established their seat at Daulatpur (located in the historic Marwar region, within the modern-day Nagaur district of Rajasthan), maintaining a close vassal relationship with the Jodhpur Durbar.
Mughal and Maratha Eras
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the rulers of Daulatpur actively participated in the military campaigns of the Jodhpur State. As vassals of Marwar, the Rathor chieftains of Daulatpur served in the imperial Mughal campaigns when Jodhpur was allied with the Mughal crown, and later defended their territories during the turbulent period of Maratha incursions in Marwar.
The estate holders of Daulatpur, recognized for their martial prowess, maintained a local fort and a small standing force to secure the trade routes and collect revenue on behalf of the central administration at Jodhpur. They held a respectable seat in the Jodhpur court (Durbar) among the nobility of Marwar.
British Period and Treaty of 1818
With the decline of the Maratha Empire and the rise of the British East India Company, Jodhpur State entered into a subsidiary alliance in 1818. Under this treaty, the princely state of Jodhpur, along with its subordinate jagirs like Daulatpur, came under British suzerainty.
During this period of relative political stability, the rulers of Daulatpur transitioned from active military commanders to administrative lords. They focused on local governance, land revenue settlement, and judicial management within their jagir limits, paying annual tribute (rekhi and chakri) to the Maharaja of Jodhpur.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Jodhpur merged into the United State of Rajasthan in 1949. This marked the beginning of democratic integration for the feudal estates of Rajputana.
Under the landmark Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act, 1952, the jagirdari system was formally abolished. The administrative and revenue-collecting rights of the Daulatpur Jagir were transferred to the state government of Rajasthan. Today, the descendants of the Daulatpur Rathore family reside in Rajasthan and other parts of India, preserving their rich cultural heritage, ancestral properties, and historical legacies.
