History
Origin and Foundation of Chomu Thikana
The history of Chomu Thikana is deeply intertwined with the Nathawat clan, an influential sub-clan of the Kachwaha Rajputs of Amber (later Jaipur). The Nathawats trace their descent from Rao Natha, a prominent son of Raja Prithviraj Singh I of Amber. Rao Gopalji, who was granted the fief of Samode and Chomu, laid the initial foundation of the family's fortunes in the mid-16th century. His descendant, Thakur Karan Singh, laid the foundation of the grand Chomu Fort (initially known as Chomugarh or Dharadhargadh) around 1598. Built as a strategic mud fort to secure the northern frontiers of the Amber kingdom, it was gradually fortified with stone over successive generations, transforming into an imposing stronghold.
The Strategic Role in Jaipur State (Mughal and Maratha Eras)
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Chiefs of Chomu distinguished themselves as formidable military commanders and savvy statesmen in the service of the Jaipur state and the Mughal Empire. As "Tazimi" nobles of the highest order, the Thakurs of Chomu enjoyed a highly privileged seat in the royal court (Darbar) of Jaipur, reflecting the high esteem and trust reposed in them by the Maharajas. The Chomu cavalry was renowned for its discipline and played a critical role in Jaipur’s military campaigns.
During the turbulent 18th century, amidst the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of Maratha influence in Rajputana, the Chomu chiefs acted as premier counselors. They successfully navigated complex diplomatic waters to protect the territorial and political integrity of the Jaipur State against external incursions.
Enlightened Reformers: The Era of Thakur Ram Singh
The 19th century ushered in an era of administrative reform and modernization. The most prominent reformer from this Thikana was Thakur Ram Singh of Chomu, who served as the Prime Minister (Musahib Ala) of Jaipur under Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II. An enlightened and progressive administrator, Thakur Ram Singh was instrumental in implementing wide-ranging reforms in the state. He played a key role in establishing modern educational institutions, such as the Maharaja's College and the Sanskrit College, and spearheaded the creation of the State Public Works Department, which laid the infrastructure for modern Jaipur.
The Chomu rulers were also deeply religious and philanthropic. They established and maintained a magnificent temple, along with substantial landed properties and dharamshalas, at the holy town of Brindaban in the Mathura district, which served as a spiritual haven for pilgrims from Rajputana.
Post-Independence and Modern Legacy
Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states, the Thikana of Chomu merged into the state of Rajasthan. The historic Chomugarh Fort, representing over four centuries of architectural evolution from a rugged military fort to a grand palace with Rajput, Mughal, and European influences, remains a major landmark.
Today, the fortified palace of Chomu has been meticulously restored and operates as a premier heritage luxury hotel. It stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance and cultural legacy of the Nathawat Rajputs. The town of Chomu itself has evolved into a bustling commercial hub, famous for its agricultural markets and historical heritage.
