History

The historic estate of Chandiya, situated in the modern-day Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, was a premier Thikana of the princely Rewa State, governed by the illustrious Baghela clan of Solanki Rajputs. Established by a cadet branch of the Rewa ruling family, Chandiya held a strategically vital position in the Baghelkhand region, defending the state's frontiers and administering justice through its fort-centric governance. During the Mughal and British periods, the Thakur of Chandiya maintained substantial administrative autonomy while fulfilling feudal obligations to the Maharaja of Rewa under the political supervision of the Central India Agency. Following India's independence and the subsequent integration of princely states, Chandiya merged into Vindhya Pradesh in 1948 and ultimately became part of the state of Madhya Pradesh in 1956, transitioning its feudal heritage into the democratic fabric of modern India.
