History

Origin and Foundation of Balonda Thikana

The foundation of Balonda Thikana (also historically referred to as Baloda) is deeply connected with the division of the Panchpana—the five principal estates of Jhunjhunu allocated among the descendants of the legendary Maharao Shardul Singh Ji. Thakur Dalel Singh Ji, the founder of the estate, was a prominent noble of the Shekhawat clan. After leaving his original capital of Dalelgarh (modern-day Pilani) due to internal family disputes with his brothers, he established his seat of power at Balonda. The estate was initially comprised of five strategic villages, where the descendants of Thakur Dalel Singh Ji, known as the Dalelsinghot Shekhawats, continued to rule.

The Battle of Mandan and Military Exploits

Before migrating to Balonda, Thakur Dalel Singh Ji proved his military mettle in several campaigns. His most notable exploit was during the historic Battles of Mandan. Fought during the late 18th century against invading Mughal and local allied forces, Dalel Singh Ji fought alongside the joint Shekhawat forces under the leadership of his father, Thakur Nawal Singh Ji of Nawalgarh. His exceptional bravery in defending the territorial sovereignty of Shekhawati solidified his reputation as an outstanding military commander of his era.

Feudal Administration and British Period

During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Balonda operated as an independent Thikana tributary to the Kachwaha rulers of Jaipur State. Under the British paramountcy, the rulers of Balonda maintained administrative and judicial autonomy over their subjects. The Thikana was responsible for maintaining local law and order, revenue collection, and contributing to the military contingents of Jaipur during times of state emergencies. The rulers of Balonda were active patrons of local architecture, constructing several stepwells, temples, and residential havelis that still stand today as examples of Shekhawati heritage.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the integration of princely states into the Union of India, Balonda was integrated into the newly formed state of Rajasthan. The feudal system of Jagirdari was formally abolished with the enactment of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952. Despite the loss of their administrative privileges, the descendants of the Balonda royal household continue to hold a respected position in local society, actively participating in modern public life, business, and preservation of Rajput heritage in the Jhunjhunu district.
