History
Origin and Foundation of Badgaon Thikana
Badgaon Thikana, situated in the rugged terrain of the modern-day Sirohi district in Rajasthan, was a prominent and highly influential estate (jagir) under the princely state of Sirohi State. The Thikana was ruled by the distinguished Deora clan, a powerful cadet branch of the Songara Chauhan Rajputs. The Deora Chauhans established their sovereignty in the Abu-Sirohi region during the late 13th and early 14th centuries under the leadership of Rao Lumba. Badgaon was granted to the descendants of the ruling family of Sirohi, serving both as a administrative headquarters and a strategic military outpost to safeguard the kingdom’s borders.
Historical Significance and the British Era
As premier nobles (Sirdars) of the Sirohi state, the Thakurs of Badgaon played a pivotal role in the region's geopolitics. They were instrumental in defending Sirohi against territorial incursions from the neighboring states of Mewar and Marwar, as well as during conflicts with local tribal chieftains. When Sirohi entered into a protective alliance with the British East India Company in 1823 to ward off Maratha incursions and restore internal order, the nobles of Badgaon adapted to the new administrative frameworks, maintaining peace, collection of revenue, and local governance within their fiefdom.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Sirohi was integrated into the Indian Union, eventually becoming a part of the unified state of Rajasthan. The historic jagirdari system was formally dismantled with the passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in the early 1950s. Today, the legacy of Badgaon Thikana is preserved by its descendants, and the historical architecture of the estate continues to attract historians interested in the feudal heritage of the Sirohi district.
