Anandpur

Origin and Foundation

The historical state of Anandpur, situated in the central Panchal region of the Saurashtra peninsula (modern-day Surendranagar district in Gujarat), boasts an ancient heritage. The foundation of the settlement dates back to approximately 1068 AD, established by Anant Chudasama (also known as Chudasama Anant), a prince belonging to the legendary Chudasama dynasty of Junagadh. The town of Anandpur was named in his honor and served as a strategic outpost for the Chudasamas in the northern plains of Kathiawar.

Transition to Kathi Kshatriya Rule

During the late medieval period, the geopolitical landscape of Kathiawar underwent significant changes with the migration and rise of the Kathi Kshatriyas. The Khachar clan of the Kathis, known for their martial prowess, gradually established hegemony over the Panchal region, centered around nearby areas like Chotila. Through strategic alliances and territorial conquests following the decline of the Sultanate of Gujarat and the weakening of the Chudasama power, the Kathi chiefs acquired Anandpur. It subsequently became the seat of a prominent branch of the Khachar Kathis.

British Protectorate and Administrative Status

With the advent of the British East India Company and the subsequent establishment of the British Kathiawar Agency, Anandpur was recognized as a non-salute princely state. Under the colonial administrative classification of regional states, Anandpur was designated as a Sixth Class State. Due to this classification, its judicial and administrative powers were limited. The local rulers exercised the following jurisdictional powers:

• Criminal Jurisdiction: Power to award up to three months of rigorous imprisonment and impose fines of up to 200 Rupees.
• Civil Jurisdiction: Authority to hear civil cases and decide disputes to the financial limit of 500 Rupees.

Unlike many other Kathi estates in Kathiawar that followed the traditional system of Bhagvand (the equal division of ancestral property among all sons, which often led to extreme fragmentation of estates), the ruling house of Anandpur followed the strict rule of primogeniture. This law of succession ensured that the state remained intact under a single ruling chief, preserving its political integrity and stability throughout the British Raj.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following the end of British rule in India in August 1947, the state of Anandpur, under its last ruler, acceded to the newly formed Dominion of India. In February 1948, the state officially merged into the United State of Kathiawar, which was later renamed the Saurashtra State. Following subsequent administrative reorganizations of independent India, the territory of the former princely state became a part of the Bombay State in 1956, and eventually, the state of Gujarat upon its linguistic bifurcation on May 1, 1960. Today, Anandpur survives as a historic locality within the Chotila taluka of Surendranagar district, preserving the heritage of its Chudasama founders and Kathi Kshatriya rulers.
