History

Alelal Jagir, situated in the historical Kangra region of modern-day Himachal Pradesh, was a prominent fiefdom held by a cadet branch of the ancient Katoch dynasty, one of the oldest surviving royal lineages in the world. Historically, the jagir was granted as a maintenance estate (appanage) to junior members of the Katoch royal clan, who played a significant role in defending the hill state's sovereignty during turbulent eras, including conflicts with the Gorkhas and the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Following the British annexation of the Punjab Hill States after the Anglo-Sikh Wars, the rulers of the Alelal estate retained their local administrative influence and revenue-collecting rights as jagirdars under British suzerainty. Following India's independence in 1947, the jagirdari system was formally abolished under the Himachal Pradesh land reform legislations, integrating the historic estate into the democratic framework of the modern Indian state while preserving its rich cultural and architectural heritage.
