History

Origin and Foundation

The Thikana of Achrol belongs to the Balbhadrot branch of the Kachwaha dynasty of Rajputs. Kunwar Balbhadra Singh, the younger son of Raja Prithviraj Singhji of Amber (who ruled from 1503 to 1527 CE), was granted estates that eventually crystallized into the prominent Thikana of Achrol. The descendants of Balbhadra Singh came to be known as Balbhadrots, holding a high status among the nobility of the Jaipur State as Tazimi Sirdars.

Role in Amber and Jaipur State Affairs

Due to its strategic location on the northern periphery of Jaipur, Achrol served as a vital defensive outpost. The ruling family constructed the formidable Achrol Fort on a hilltop to guard the approach routes to the capital. Throughout the Mughal period and the subsequent Maratha incursions, the Thakurs of Achrol fought valiantly alongside the Maharajas of Jaipur in several military expeditions, proving their loyalty and military prowess on numerous occasions.

The British Era and Administrative Prominence

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the rulers of Achrol transitioned from military chieftains to highly capable administrators. This era saw the Thikana rise to immense political influence within the durbar of the Jaipur State.

  • Thakur Hari Singh of Achrol: One of the most prominent administrators of his time, Thakur Hari Singh served as a member of the State Council of Jaipur and held the portfolio of Home Minister. He was highly regarded for his diplomatic acumen and played a key role in the administrative reforms of the princely state during the reigns of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II and Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II.
  • Architecture and Culture: Under the patronage of the Achrol nobles, several structures of immense cultural and architectural value were erected. Apart from the hilltop fort, the grand Achrol Haveli, located inside the walled city of Jaipur, stands as a prime example of late 19th-century Indo-Saracenic and European fusion architecture, reflecting the high aesthetic sensibilities of the family.

Post-Independence and Legacy

Following India's independence in 1947 and the integration of the princely states into the Indian Union, the administrative and feudal powers of the Thikana were dissolved. The family transitioned into the modern era, focusing on heritage preservation, business, and public service. Today, the Achrol Fort and the historic Achrol Haveli remain significant heritage landmarks in the Jaipur region, preserving the rich history of the Balbhadrot Kachwaha clan.
