History
Origin and Foundation of Phaltan State
The princely state of Phaltan, located in the Deccan region of modern-day Maharashtra, holds a venerable place in Indian history. The ruling dynasty of Phaltan, the Naik Nimbalkars, trace their ancestry to the ancient Parmar (Pawar) Rajput dynasty of Dhar in Malwa. According to historical traditions, the state was established around 1284 by Nimbraj Bahadur, who received a grant of land from the Yadava dynasty of Devagiri. The family subsequently derived their surname "Nimbalkar" from the village of Nimbalik, which was one of their early ancestral fiefs.
During the medieval era, Phaltan occupied a strategically vital position on the Deccan plateau, acting as a buffer and a key military stronghold between competing regional powers, including the Bahmani Sultanate, the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, and the rising Maratha Empire. For more detailed genealogical accounts of the dynasty, historians often refer to the Phaltan State Archives.
The Maratha Period and Royal Alliances
The history of the Naik Nimbalkars is deeply intertwined with the rise of the Maratha Empire under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The alliance between the Bhonsle and Nimbalkar families was cemented through matrimonial bonds of immense historical consequence. Maharani Saibai, the first and chief consort of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the mother of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, was the daughter of Mudhoji Rao Naik Nimbalkar, the ruler of Phaltan.
Another prominent historical figure of this era was Bajaji Rao Naik Nimbalkar. His reign was marked by turbulent political transitions. Captured by the Adil Shahi Sultan of Bijapur, Bajaji Rao was forcibly converted to Islam. Recognizing his strategic importance and his true allegiance to the soil, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, along with his mother Rajmata Jijabai, facilitated Bajaji Rao’s reconversion to Hinduism—a rare and revolutionary event in the 17th century. To solidify this reintegration, Shivaji Maharaj gave his own daughter, Sakhubai, in marriage to Bajaji Rao’s son, Mahadji Nimbalkar. More about this alliance can be read on the biography of Maharani Saibai.
Mughal, Adil Shahi, and British Periods
Throughout the late 17th and 18th centuries, the rulers of Phaltan maneuvered through complex diplomatic waters. They initially served as high-ranking military commanders (Sardars) under the Adil Shahi of Bijapur and later under the Mughal Empire during its southern expansion. However, with the consolidation of the Maratha Confederacy under the Peshwas, the Nimbalkars returned to the Maratha fold as powerful vassals.
Following the defeat of the Peshwa in the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817–1818), Phaltan came under British suzerainty. In 1819, the British East India Company recognized the autonomy of Phaltan, placing it under the political supervision of the Satara Agency, which later became part of the Deccan States Agency of the Bombay Presidency. Unlike many other states that faced annexation under the Doctrine of Lapse, Phaltan maintained its internal autonomy through treaties and steadfast administration.
Key Reformers and Modernisation
The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a golden era of reform and development for Phaltan under visionary rulers who championed modern education, agricultural reforms, and civic infrastructure:
- Shrimant Mudhojirao III Naik Nimbalkar (ruled 1841–1916): He was a highly respected ruler who laid the foundation of modern civic amenities in the state. He established schools, hospitals, and introduced efficient revenue collection systems.
- Shrimant Malojirao IV (Nana Saheb) Naik Nimbalkar (ruled 1916–1948): A highly educated and progressive ruler, Malojirao IV transformed Phaltan into a model state. He was instrumental in constructing the Nira Right Bank Canal project, which brought irrigation to the arid tracts of Phaltan, drastically improving the life of local farmers. He also founded the Phaltan Sugar Works, laying the cornerstone of the region's cooperative sugar industry.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the last ruler of Phaltan, Shrimant Malojirao IV, signed the Instrument of Accession, merging the state into the Dominion of India on 8th March 1948. Phaltan subsequently became a part of the Bombay State, and later, the Satara district in the state of Maharashtra upon its linguistic reorganization in 1960.
The royal family of Phaltan transitioned successfully into democratic India. Shrimant Malojirao IV served as a minister in the Bombay State cabinet. His descendants, including Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, have played significant roles in Maharashtra state politics, serving in various high-profile ministerial capacities and as the Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Today, Phaltan is celebrated as a bustling industrial and agricultural hub, famous for its pomegranate and sugar plantations, while still preserving its rich heritage of forts, temples, and royal palaces.
