History

Origin and Foundation of Kawla Thikana

Kawla Thikana, located in the present-day Jalore district of Rajasthan, was a prominent estate ruled by the Sindhal Rathore clan. The Sindhal Rathores trace their lineage to Rao Sindhal, a son of Rao Asthanji, who was the second ruler of the Rathore dynasty of Marwar. Over the centuries, the descendants of Rao Sindhal established several strongholds in the southwestern region of Marwar, with Kawla serving as a significant seat of feudal power. The rulers of Kawla maintained strong ties with the parent state of Marwar (Jodhpur), fulfilling military obligations and contributing to the defense of the region against external incursions.

Feudal Era and Historical Significance

During the medieval and British colonial periods, Kawla operated as a vassal state under the suzerainty of the Maharaja of Jodhpur. The Thakurs of Kawla were renowned for their martial valour, actively participating in the military campaigns of the Jodhpur State forces. As members of the Sindhal branch, they enjoyed a distinct status within the feudal hierarchy of Marwar. They were responsible for maintaining law and order, collecting revenue, and safeguarding the trade routes passing through their territory.

Post-Independence and Modern Legacy

Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Jodhpur integrated into the Union of India, leading to the formal abolition of the jagirdari system. Consequently, Kawla transitioned from a feudal estate into a democratic administrative unit. Today, the heritage of the Sindhal Rathores of Kawla is preserved through their ancestral structures, traditional customs, and local folklore in the Jalore region.
