History

Origin and Foundation of Harasar Thikana

The Thikana of Harasar was a prominent estate (jagir) under the erstwhile princely state of Bikaner State in Rajasthan, India. The rulers of Harasar belong to the illustrious Bidawat clan, which is a major sub-clan of the Rathore dynasty of Rajputs.

The origin of the Bidawat clan traces back to Rao Bida, the son of Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur) and the younger brother of Rao Bika (the founder of Bikaner State). Rao Bida carved out his own principality in the Chhapar-Dronpur and Ladnun regions of present-day Churu district. Over generations, the descendants of Rao Bida expanded their territories and established several noble fiefdoms (thikanas) under the suzerainty of the Maharaja of Bikaner, with Harasar being one of the most prominent estates among them.

Role in the Princely State of Bikaner

As premier nobles of Bikaner, the Thakurs of Harasar played a vital role in the military and administrative affairs of the state. They provided military contingents to the Bikaner State Army during regional conflicts and external campaigns. Under the British Raj, the nobles of Harasar maintained loyal relations with the state durbar while contributing significantly to local governance, revenue administration, and rural economy.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the thikana witnessed considerable modernization under the influence of Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner, who was renowned for his progressive reforms. The Thakurs of Harasar aligned with these developmental policies, promoting local trade, agriculture, and water conservation efforts within their jagir.

Post-Independence and the Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of princely states into the Union of India, the jagirdari system was abolished. The family transitioned from their feudal administrative roles to private citizens, while continuing to preserve their rich cultural heritage.

In the modern era, the legacy of Harasar Thikana is widely recognized through its architectural and cultural contributions. Thakur Jeoraj Singh of Harasar, a prominent noble of his time, constructed the majestic Harasar Haveli in Bikaner city. Today, this historic mansion has been converted into a well-known heritage hotel, run by the descendants of the Harasar family. The hotel serves as a living museum, showcasing traditional Rajasthani architecture, antique artifacts, and the martial heritage of the Rathore Rajputs, thereby contributing significantly to the heritage tourism of Bikaner.
