History

Origin and Foundation of Dudhwa Khara Thikana

Dudhwa Khara (also spelled Dudhwakhara), situated in the modern-day Churu district of Rajasthan, was a prominent feudal estate (Thikana) of the princely state of Bikaner. The Thikana was ruled by the Kandhal Banirot clan of the Rathore dynasty. The lineage traces its origin back to Rawat Kandhal, the brother of Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur) and the chief architect who helped his nephew, Rao Bika, establish the kingdom of Bikaner in 1488 AD.

Rawat Kandhal's descendants are known as the Kandhalot Rathores. Among his sons, Banir ji established a powerful sub-branch known as the Banirot Rathores. The estate of Dudhwa Khara was granted to the descendants of Banir ji as a reward for their military valor, strategic counsel, and contributions to the consolidation of the Bikaner State.

Role in the Bikaner State Administration

As premier nobles (Thakurs) of the Bikaner State, the rulers of Dudhwa Khara held a significant position in the royal court (Darbar). They were bound by the traditional feudal system of Rekh (tribute) and Chakri (military service) to the Maharaja of Bikaner. For generations, the Banirot Rathores of this Thikana commanded cavalry units and defended the northern frontiers of the desert kingdom against external incursions and neighboring rival states.

The Dudhwa Khara Peasant Movement (1940s)

In the mid-20th century, Dudhwa Khara became the epicenter of one of the most significant anti-feudal agrarian struggles in Rajputana, known as the Dudhwa Khara Peasant Movement. Under the reign of Maharaja Sadul Singh of Bikaner, the local peasantry rose in rebellion against the oppressive taxes (known locally as Lags and Baags), forced labor (Begar), and arbitrary evictions practiced by the Thikana administration under Thakur Surajmal Singh.

The struggle was led by the iconic freedom fighter Chaudhary Hanuman Singh Budania, who openly defied the authority of the Thakur and the Bikaner State. The movement gained momentum when it aligned with the Bikaner Rajya Praja Parishad. Despite severe oppression, mass arrests, and the exile of its leaders, the relentless agitation of the farmers eventually forced the state authorities to implement land reforms, making the Dudhwa Khara movement a milestone in the democratic awakening of Northern Rajasthan.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

Following India's independence in 1947 and the subsequent integration of the Bikaner princely state into the United State of Greater Rajasthan in 1949, the feudal privileges of the Dudhwa Khara Thikana were gradually phased out. The passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952 formally abolished the Jagirdari system, transferring land ownership to the actual tillers of the soil.

Today, Dudhwa Khara is recognized for its historical legacy, traditional Rajasthani architecture, and its contribution to the democratic transformation of the region. The descendants of the Thikana reside in Rajasthan and continue to preserve their cultural heritage.
