History
Origin and Genealogy
The Jaimalot (or Jaimaldasot) Rathores trace their lineage back to the illustrious warrior Rao Jaimal of Merta, a legendary figure in Rajput history famed for his heroic defense of Chittorgarh against the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1567–1568. Rao Jaimal was the grandson of Rao Duda, the ruler of Merta, and a descendant of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. Following geopolitical conflicts in Marwar, Rao Jaimal was granted the grand estate of Badnore in 1554 AD by Maharana Udai Singh II of Mewar. Badnore subsequently became one of the premier thikanas (fiefdoms) of Mewar, held by the "Solah Umraos" (the sixteen first-class nobles of the Mewar court).
Establishment of Dabla Thikana
During the reign of Rao Mandan Das (also referred to as Manman Das), the third Rao of Badnore, the vast estate was sub-divided to accommodate his descendants. His sixth son, Rao Sabal Singh Ji, was granted the estate of Dabla as his patrimony. Rao Sabal Singh Ji established the Thikana of Dabla and initiated the construction of the Dabla Fort. Strategically situated in the rugged terrain of the Mewar region, the fort was engineered to be an impenetrable stronghold, equipped with thick defensive walls and bastions capable of resisting external invasions.
Mughal and Maratha Periods
As loyal feudatories to the Maharanas of Udaipur (Mewar), the Thakurs of Dabla actively participated in the defense of the realm. Throughout the late 17th and 18th centuries, Mewar faced relentless military incursions, initially from Mughal forces and later from the Maratha Confederacy (specifically the Scindias and Holkars). The Jaimalot Rathores of Dabla provided crucial military levies to the state forces of Udaipur, securing the northern borders of the kingdom and maintaining local law and order during periods of central administrative decline.
The British Era and Feudal Governance
With the signing of the Treaty of 1818 between Maharana Bhim Singh of Mewar and the British East India Company, a period of relative peace was ushered into Rajasthan. Under the British Raj, the Thikana of Dabla maintained its internal autonomy. The Thakurs of Dabla managed local revenue collection, judicial administration, and agrarian welfare within their territory, paying the customary rekh (tribute) to the Mewar Darbar.
Post-Independence and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the Princely State of Mewar integrated into the United State of Rajasthan. With the passage of the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952, the jagirdari system was formally abolished. The feudal administrative powers of the Dabla Thikana came to an end, and the lands were transitioned under the democratic government. Today, the descendants of the Dabla royal lineage reside as private citizens, dedicated to preserving the architectural heritage of the historical Dabla Fort and promoting the cultural legacy of the Jaimalot Rathores in modern Rajasthan.
