History

Origin and Migration from Rajputana

The ruling family of the Akaltara Malguzari estate belongs to the Suryavanshi Rana Chhatri clan (Sisodia dynasty) of the Bhardwaj gotra. According to historical records and colonial gazetteers, the family traces its ancestry to two brothers, Sardar Singh and Pila Singh, who migrated from the historic region of Mewar in Rajputana. While early British records (such as the Gazette of India, 1909-10) occasionally conflated their origin as "Mewar in the Jodhpur State"—likely confusing the Sisodia seat of Mewar with the Rathore-ruled state of Jodhpur—the family's genealogical traditions firmly connect them to the Sisodia Ranas of Mewar.

The brothers embarked on a pilgrimage to the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri (modern-day Odisha). During their journey through Central India, they entered military and administrative service, first under the Maharaja of Surguja, and later under the Haihaiyavanshi Raja of Ratanpur, the traditional capital of Chhattisgarh. The family initially established their local seat at the village of Pondi, which they claimed as their original ancestral village in the region.

Establishment and Expansion of the Thikana

Following the decline of the Ratanpur Kingdom and the subsequent transitions through Maratha Bhonsle rule to British administration, the family consolidated its position in the Bilaspur region (now part of the Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh).

In 1858, during the first land settlement under the British deputy commissioner Major Elliot, Sardar Singh was officially recognized as the proprietor of six villages, for which he received formal pattas (land revenue deeds). Exhibiting strong financial acumen, Sardar Singh expanded his influence by establishing a successful banking and money-lending business. Over time, he systematically expanded the estate by purchasing 45 additional villages, including a prestigious damami (revenue-free or privileged) village. By the turn of the 20th century, the Akaltara estate had grown to encompass 51 villages, establishing them as one of the premier landowning lineages in the district.

Colonial Recognition and Status

Under the British Central Provinces administration, the family enjoyed high social standing and administrative privileges. Sardar Singh and his younger brother, Gaur Singh, were recognized as Darbaris (members of the Governor's Durbar), a title reserved for the leading nobility of the province. Furthermore, Sardar Singh was granted a prestigious exemption under the Indian Arms Act, signifying the high level of trust reposed in him by the administration.

This status was maintained by subsequent generations. Raja Manmohan Singh, the grandson of Sardar Singh, succeeded as a Darbari, while Bishal Singh, the son of Gaur Singh, continued to hold the privilege of Arms Act exemption. The family’s seat, Akaltara, developed from a rural estate headquarters into a prominent municipality and local economic center.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

With the independence of India in 1947 and the subsequent passing of the Madhya Pradesh Abolition of Proprietary Rights Act in 1950, the Malguzari system was formally abolished. The proprietary and revenue-collection rights of the Akaltara estate were dissolved, and the agricultural lands were transitioned to the tillers under land ceiling reforms.

Despite the loss of formal feudal privileges, the legacy of the Sisodia Ranas of Akaltara remains deeply respected in the Janjgir-Champa region. The family's historical contributions to local infrastructure, temple patronages, and community development continue to be recognized as integral to the cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh.
