History
Origin and Foundation of Meja Jagir
The Meja Jagir, situated in the Bhilwara region of Rajasthan, was an elite first-class estate (Thikana) of the princely state of Mewar (Udaipur). The ruling family of Meja belongs to the illustrious Chundawat clan of the Sisodia Rajput dynasty. The Chundawats trace their ancestry back to Rawat Chunda, the eldest son of Maharana Lakha of Mewar, who famously renounced his claim to the throne of Chittorgarh in the 15th century to secure the succession of his younger half-brother, Mokal. The Meja estate was granted to Rawat Amar Singhji, a distinguished noble who was the son of Rawat Zalim Singh of Bemali. This grant elevated the Meja house to the rank of the premier nobles (Solah Umraos) of the Mewar state council.
The Administrative Prominence of Rawat Amar Singhji
Rawat Amar Singhji was a highly influential administrator and diplomat during the late 19th century. His tenure coincided with a period of intense administrative modernization in Mewar under the reigns of Maharana Shambhu Singh and Maharana Sajjan Singh. Recognizing his judicial acumen and leadership, Maharana Sajjan Singh appointed Rawat Amar Singhji of Meja as a prominent member of the Mahendraj Sabha (also known as the Ijlas-i-Khas), which was established in 1880 as the supreme judicial and executive council of the state. In this capacity, Rawat Amar Singhji played a pivotal role in reforming the judicial process, codifying state laws, and mediating boundary disputes between neighboring thikanas.
The British Period and Treaty Relations
During the British Raj, the Thikana of Meja maintained stable relations with both the Mewar Durbar and the British Political Agent stationed at Erinpura and Mewar. As a First-Class Noble, the Rawat of Meja enjoyed civil and judicial powers within his estate, including the right to collect land revenue and maintain a local militia for the defense of the state. The Meja nobles actively participated in the state durbars and royal processions, reinforcing their position in the feudal hierarchy of Mewar. Detailed accounts of the diplomatic interactions and administrative structures of the era can be found in the Imperial Gazetteer of India.
Post-Independence Transition and Modern Era
Following India's independence in 1947, the accession of the Mewar State into the United State of Rajasthan, and the subsequent abolition of the Jagirdari system under the Rajasthan Land Reforms and Resumption of Jagirs Act in 1952, the formal administrative powers of the Meja Thikana were dissolved. The family transitioned into modern democratic India, shifting their focus toward agriculture, local development, and the preservation of their historic heritage. Today, the name Meja is widely recognized for the historic Meja Dam, constructed on the Kothari River in the Bhilwara District, which remains a vital water resource and a scenic landmark in the region originally governed by the Chundawat nobles.
