History

The Kurwar estate, situated in the Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, represents one of the premier talukas historically ruled by the Bachgoti clan of Rajputs, a prominent branch of the Chauhans who claim descent from the lineage of Prithviraj Chauhan. Established during the medieval period following the migration of the clan's patriarch, Bariar Singh, to the fertile plains of Awadh, the Bachgoti dynasty asserted its dominance over the region, eventually dividing into influential houses such as Kurwar, Hasanpur, and Bhiti. Throughout the Mughal era and the subsequent reign of the Nawabs of Awadh, the chieftains of Kurwar maintained significant regional autonomy through strategic alliances and military prowess. Under the British administration, Kurwar was officially recognized as an influential Taluqdari state, with its rulers playing a pivotal role in regional administration, agricultural development, and local philanthropy. Following India's independence and the subsequent implementation of the Zamindari Abolition Act, the formal administrative authority of the taluka was dissolved, yet the legacy of the Bachgoti Rajputs persists through their architectural heritage and enduring cultural influence in the Sultanpur district.
