History

The Kareliya Thikana is an ancestral estate belonging to the illustrious Chundawat clan of the Sisodia dynasty of Mewar. The thikana was established by Thakur Gopal Singh, the first Thakur of Kareliya, who was the son of Thakur Gaj Singh (the first Thakur of Kamla Amba) and the grandson of Thakur Venidas of the historic Solaj estate. Descending from Rawal Chunda of Mewar, who famously renounced his claim to the throne of Chittorgarh, the rulers of Kareliya held a distinguished position among the feudal nobility of the region. Throughout the Mughal, Maratha, and British protectorate eras, the thikana played an active role in maintaining regional stability and safeguarding local frontiers under the broader influence of the Mewar and Dungarpur states, a legacy well-documented in regional gazetteers and the celebrated historical text Vir Vinod by Kaviraj Shyamaldas.
