Ajabpur

The Ajabpur Zamindari, situated in the fertile Dun Valley of modern-day Dehradun, Uttarakhand, was historically held by a branch of the illustrious Chandel Rajput dynasty. Tracing their ancestral roots back to the medieval Chandel rulers of Bundelkhand, and sharing close kinship with the Chandel rulers of Bilaspur, this family established themselves as influential landholders in the Garhwal region. During the turbulent geopolitical shifts of the late 18^th and early 19^th centuries—which saw the region transition from the rule of the Garhwal Kingdom, through a brief Gorkha occupation, to British administration following the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–1816—the Zamindars of Ajabpur maintained local agrarian prominence. Under the British Raj, they played a significant role in the land revenue settlements of the Dehradun district, contributing to the agricultural development of the valley. Following India's independence and the subsequent implementation of the Zamindari abolition laws, the estate was integrated into the modern democratic framework, and its historic seat, Ajabpur Kalan, transitioned into a major urban locality within the thriving capital city of Dehradun.
